How to Color Grade in DaVinci Resolve
The Color page is where flat footage becomes cinema — and it's the same professional grading environment used on Hollywood films, included free in DaVinci Resolve. It looks intimidating: glowing wheels, flickering scopes, a blank node staring back at you. But a strong grade follows a repeatable order every time: manage color, correct, match, isolate, then create your look. This guide walks that workflow step by step, the way a colorist actually works — scope-driven, node-based, and entirely doable in the free version.
Correction vs Grading (and Free vs Studio)
Two words get used interchangeably and shouldn't be. Color correction is making footage look right — balancing exposure, fixing white balance, removing casts, and matching every shot so the sequence looks natural and consistent. Color grading is making footage look intentional — adding mood, style and a signature look, like a warm nostalgic glow or a cool cinematic teal-and-orange. You always correct first and grade second, and in Resolve you keep them on separate nodes so each stays editable. Get that order right and everything else falls into place.
The free version of DaVinci Resolve includes the complete Color page — primary and secondary correction, the full node workflow, color wheels, curves, HSL qualifiers, power windows, tracking, scopes and color management.
DaVinci Resolve Studio (a one-time $295) adds HDR grading, GPU acceleration, advanced noise reduction, film grain, and higher-quality AI tools like Magic Mask — genuinely useful for pro finishing, but not required to learn or to produce excellent grades. Everything in this guide works in the free version unless noted.

This walkthrough reflects the current DaVinci Resolve release line, with a newer version and its additional AI tools rolling out through 2026. The Color page workflow has been stable for years, so the order of operations, the node approach and the scope-driven method all carry across versions. Menu paths and a few tool names may shift slightly between releases — if something isn't where described, check the equivalent panel in your version rather than assuming the method changed. The Grading Order That Always Works
Before touching a wheel, hold this sequence in your head. Nearly every professional grade moves through these stages in order, each on its own node so nothing is destructive.
The first three stages make it look right; the last three make it look intentional. Each lives on its own node.
Remember: about 90% of any grade comes from just three tools — nodes, color wheels and curves. Master those and the dense Color page stops being intimidating.
The single habit that separates clean grades from messy ones: give each node a single purpose. Correction on node 1, white balance on node 2, a secondary skin fix on node 3, the look on node 4, and so on.
Add a serial node with Alt/Option + S and label it (right-click › Node Label). When something looks off later, you can fix or bypass just that one node instead of unpicking your whole grade.

How to Color Grade in DaVinci Resolve: The 10 Steps
Set up color management first
Do this before you grade anything. Go to Project Settings › Color Management and set Color Science to DaVinci YRGB Color Managed (RCM). Set the Input Color Space to your camera's format (e.g. your log profile — you can override per clip in the Media Pool for mixed cameras), the Timeline Color Space to Rec.709 Gamma 2.4 for standard delivery, and the Output to match your display.
This normalizes flat log or raw footage into a neutral, correctly-contrasted starting image, so you're grading a clean base rather than fighting a washed-out picture. Prefer manual control? Skip RCM and add a Color Space Transform node instead.
Open the Color page and learn the node graph
Press Shift + 6 (or click the Color icon at the bottom). Your clip starts with a single node in the Node Editor (top right). Build your grade by adding serial nodes with Alt/Option + S — each passes the image to the next, in order.
Follow the sequence above: correction, then secondaries, then look. Below the viewer you'll find the timeline thumbnails (click to jump between clips), and the Gallery (top left) for saving stills and grades. Keep the node tree tidy and labeled — a readable tree is a fixable tree.
Turn on your scopes
Open the video scopes (the scope icon, bottom right, or View › Video Scopes). Three do most of the work:
Waveform shows luminance top-to-bottom — read exposure here, keeping shadows near the bottom without crushing and highlights near the top without clipping. RGB Parade splits the image into red, green and blue — misaligned channels in neutral areas reveal a color cast. Vectorscope shows hue and saturation as a circular spread, with a diagonal skin-tone line that natural skin of every complexion falls along.
Trust these over your monitor, which is almost certainly not calibrated.
Balance exposure and contrast
On your first correction node, reach for the Primaries color wheels. Use Lift (shadows), Gamma (midtones) and Gain (highlights) — plus Offset for the whole image — to set your black point and white point and shape contrast, watching the Waveform as you go.
Aim for a full tonal range: blacks that sit near the bottom without a flat, crushed line, and highlights that reach the top without clipping into a hard ceiling. Nudge the master wheels under each color wheel for luminance-only moves. This single step does more for a "cinematic" feel than any LUT.
Fix white balance and color casts
Now neutralize color. The fastest route is the white-balance picker in the Primaries — click something that should be neutral gray or white and Resolve balances to it. To refine, adjust Temperature and Tint, or push the Offset wheel.
Confirm on the RGB Parade: in neutral areas, the tops and bottoms of the red, green and blue traces should line up. A parade with blue riding high and red low, for example, means a cool cast to correct. Do this on its own node so your correction stays separate from your look.
Match your shots
A sequence lives or dies on consistency. Choose one well-exposed hero shot as your reference, grade it first, then match the rest to it. Hover a clip's timeline thumbnail to get a split-screen comparison against your current clip, and match exposure first (on the Waveform), then color (on the Parade).
For a head start, right-click a clip and choose Shot Match to this Clip — Resolve analyzes both and adjusts automatically. Treat that as a first pass and clean it up on the scopes; automatic matching gets you close but rarely nails it.
Make secondary corrections
Secondaries adjust part of the image, not all of it. Add a serial node, then isolate with one of three tools:
HSL Qualifier (the eyedropper — click a color to select it, e.g. to desaturate a distracting shirt or fix skin), Power Windows (draw a shape mask around a region like the sky or a face, and track it so the mask follows motion), or Magic Mask (AI-driven — paint a stroke on a person or object and Resolve tracks it; higher quality in Studio).
Then adjust only that isolated region: tame a blown-out sky, brighten a face, or draw the eye where you want it.
Build your creative look
Correction done — now make it yours. On a dedicated look node, shape mood with the color wheels (a classic move: push shadows slightly cool and highlights slightly warm for that teal-and-orange cinematic feel), the Curves (custom luminance contrast, plus Hue vs Sat and Hue vs Hue for targeted shifts — e.g. deepen skies without touching skin), and the intuitive Color Warper grid for pushing hue and saturation by hand.
Prefer a preset start? Apply a LUT on its own node and dial it back with the node's key output gain. Throughout, keep an eye on the vectorscope so skin stays on the skin-tone line.
Refine, stylize, and add a timeline grade
Polish the finish. Add a subtle vignette (a soft, darkened Power Window at the edges) to draw focus, and consider film grain, a gentle glow/bloom, or sharpening. Noisy footage? Apply noise reduction (temporal/spatial — Studio only).
To push a consistent look across the whole edit at once, use a timeline-level grade (the clip labeled at the top of the Color page's timeline strip, or the Timeline node) — perfect for a uniform tone or final contrast. Constantly compare before/after by bypassing nodes (Ctrl/Cmd + D for the whole grade, or the numbered node bypass) so you don't overcook it.
Check and deliver
Final pass: scan the scopes one more time (for broadcast, keep levels legal — nothing clipping past the limits), and review on the best, most color-accurate display you have.
Then head to the Deliver page. Pick your format and codec — H.264 or H.265 for web and social, ProRes (or DNxHR) for a high-quality master — set the resolution and frame rate to match your timeline, and confirm the color space is correct. Hit Add to Render Queue, then Render All. For HDR delivery (Dolby Vision, HDR10+), you'll need Studio and the HDR palettes.

Use the Vectorscope's skin-tone indicator line: natural skin tones of every complexion fall along that line, so nudge your grade until the skin sits on it. Isolate skin with an HSL qualifier or Magic Mask if a look is skewing it, and avoid over-saturating or pushing an extreme color cast that turns faces orange or green.
